BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that the government is conducting various ‘false campaigns’ to create a rift in their party.
Speaking at a discussion, he also alleged that Tejgaon thana unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) acting president Zakir Hossain Milon died due to torture in police remand as part of the ‘government’s plan’ to eliminate its opponents. “The government is hatching various conspiracies against us. Various newspapers are running news, while false campaigns are there on Facebook against us to create a rift in BNP and its leadership,” he said. The BNP leader came up with the allegation while speaking at a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Kalyan Front at the Jatiya Press Club, demanding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and its standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy’s release from jail.
He alleged that the government is making efforts to create division among BNP leaders as it seriously fears people’s strength. Fakhrul believes that their party will surely get a success by carrying out a peaceful movement. “Many people question what the use of conducting such a movement is. But I would like to say it’s the only way for a movement and the government is getting afraid of our peaceful and systematic movement with people’s involvement.” Without mentioning the name of the newspaper, he said a well-known editor wrote BNP standing committee members met their party chairperson in jail with a five-point proposal of negotiation. “Where and how did he get it? Our respected persons are writing such things with red headlines.”
The BNP leader said there is no division and conflict among their leaders as they all got united after Khaleda was sent to jail. He said the government is trying to keep Khaleda in jail resorting to various tricks, even though she was granted bail from the apex court. “Why do you fear her so much? You want to keep her in jail in fear of losing power with people’s wave.”
Fakhrul warned the government that people and BNP will surely free Khaleda from jail through their peaceful programmes. He also accused the government of trying to eliminate BNP by killing its leaders with repression and harassing them with false cases. “The democratic space is gradually getting abolished.”
About the JCD leader Milon’s death in custody, he said, “He (Milon) was very fine and sound when he was arrested. What did they do during the police remand that pushed him towards death? He was killed through torture and then sent to jail.” He said Milon sacrificed his life for democracy and restoring it in the country. “Not only Milon, but also many of our boys left us over the last few years after being subjected to repressive acts.” Fakhrul urged the country’s people to get united and put up a strong resistance against the government and its repressive acts.
