The present government is trying to send back the registered Rohingya refugees, who are still in the country, and stop fresh influx of Myanmar citizens to Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated this in Parliament on Wednesday in reply to a supplementary question of Didarul Alam (Chittagong-4) during the PM’s question-answer session.
Hasina said that during her visit to Myanmar, she took up the issue of sending back the Myanmar refugees from Bangladesh. “During my meeting with Myanmar President, I also placed the matter and the Myanmar President showed his sincere attitude to resolve this.” She said that she also urged the President to take effective measurers so that no Myanmar refugee in the future tries to enter Bangladesh. The Prime Minister informed the House that at present, there are 29,000 registered Myanmar refugees in the country while the actual number is several lakhs. She mentioned that these Myanmar refugees were involved in various types of misdeeds in Bangladesh.
Hasina said that the border guard forces of both the countries are working jointly to stop the illegal entry of Myanmar citizens into Bangladesh. Talking about the history of the Rohingya refuges in Bangladesh, she said that this matter started in 1991 while BNP was in power.
“But I don’t understand why the then government did not bar this kind of entry,” she added.
