BSS, Dhaka :
Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Abdul Latif Siddique hinted the government is going to revise the country’s 16 years old telecom policy.
“Telecom policy would be revised. You people (BTRC and stakeholders) take initiatives and prepare a precise proposal after discussion on it. If you could convince me, I will go to the Prime Minister regarding the issue,” the Minister said this on Wednesday while addressing a roundtable discussion as the chief guest. Telecom Reporters’ Network, Bangladesh (TRNB) organised the roundtable discussion on “Revision of Telecom Policy” in a city hotel. Telecom policy of the country was formulated in 1998, which is now unable to address many issues.
Latif Siddique said: “The opportunists think that to regulate any thing means to barricade it, actually every thing is stumbling due to lack of understanding.”
The minister said the modern technology is only for commercialisation. “We are still living with medieval mentality and we can’t improve our mentality in line with the globalisation.”
Rohan Samarajiva, founder and Chairman of Colombo- based ICT policy think tank LIRNEasia made a keynote presentation on telecom policy.
