Government has decided to pay Tk 65 million to the transport owners for losses incurred during BNP-led alliance’s blockade and shutdown.
Since BNP-sponsored nationwide indefinite blockade started on Jan 5, vandalism and arson has left many vehicles damaged all over the country.
Government had already promised to pay for the losses incurred during the blockade to encourage transport owners and workers to ply on the road.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said so far at least 1200 vehicles including BRTC buses have been
vandalised during the blockade. “The prime minister has announced payment of Tk 65 million initially and that has been sanctioned already. The money will reach the transport owners soon.” Quader added.
At least 40 drivers and assistants have died due to acts of violence since the BNP-led alliance’s indefinite countrywide transport blockade.
