Govt to generate 16,000MW electricity by 2016

The government has undertaken a number of projects to generate 16,000 megawatt (MW) electricity by 2016.
“The Awami League-led government has achieved successes in the power sector during the past six years and power generation capacity reached to 11,265MW from 3,268MW in 2009,” an official of power, energy and mineral resources ministry told BSS on Saturday.
He said around 71 per cent of the population having access to electricity, adding, “The government has given top priority to the development of the sector considering its importance in the overall development of the country.”
According to the ministry sources, the government has fixed a target to generate 24,000 megawatt electricity by 2021.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government has a target to generate electricity by using 53 per cent coal as primary energy within the Vision 2021, the sources said.
They said the government is expecting to generate 13,301MW power by the end of this year and the government increased the number of power plants, transmission lines and distribution lines aimed at fostering the economic growth to become a middle income country by 2021.
The government has also undertaken a coal based mega power plant project having capacity of generating 10,000MW electricity. With sincere initiative of the government, the power sector is going to improve remarkably.
Moreover, some 30 power plants having 7,099 megawatt generation capacity are under construction and 17 power plants having 4,799MW are under tender process.
