The ruling Awami League [AL] has planed to counter the opposition BNP-led 20 party alliance’s movement in the month of August. It has already issued warning to BNP to resist their ‘anarchy in the name of politics’ with strong hands.
The ruling party has taken the new strategy as the BNP-led alliance has planned to launch a tougher movement to compel the government to give fresh general election under a non-party administration.
Party insiders said the government high-ups at present would not tolerate any ‘disturbance’ from the opponents in the name of movement as it would create negative impact on its series of multi-billion taka development projects.
Senior AL leaders, however, think that BNP and its alliance have also not sufficient strength to initiate an anti-government movement at the present stage.
“The government is not worried about any violence in the wake of the opposition BNP’s announcement of an anti-government movement. However, we hope BNP will hold its demonstration peacefully,” LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful
Islam said recently expressing his government’s view.
In line with its strategy, the AL high command will not anymore encourage a dialogue in near future between the ruling and opposition camps on non-party election-time government for holding next general election, party insiders said.
They said, the government will engage its full effort to complete the mega development projects to ensure its five-year tenure without any interruption.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan has said stern action would be taken if BNP tries to create anarchy and destroy public property in the name of movement.
“We have no objection if BNP goes for a constructive movement. But any disturbance in this regard won’t be tolerated,” he said, adding that BNP is planning to launch the movement at a time when the nation will be observing the month-long mourning. Meanwhile, another AL has urged BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia not to celebrate her ‘fake’ birthday by cutting cake on the National Mourning Day on August 15.
“If she cuts cake to celebrate her birthday on the National Mourning Day, it will be proved that Khaleda Zia has still been siding with the killers of Bangabandhu and the defeated forces of 1971,” A L joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said recently. Regarding his party’s strategy Hanif further said, “We hope and also believe that no political parties, including BNP, will launch any action programme in the month of mourning that will tarnish its solemnity.”
The AL has announced a month-long programme to mourn the tragic death of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975 with due respect.
The programmes include a function in memory of Sheikh Kamal on his birthday on August 5. AL will organise a Milad Mahfil at its central office at Bangabandhu Avenue on Fazilatunnesa Mujib’s birthday on August 8.
On August 15, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay their tributes by placing wreaths at the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32. Later in the day, they will go to Banani graveyard and place wreaths at the graves of Bangabandhu’s family members. Wreaths will also be placed at Bangabandhu’s grave at Tungipara on August 15.
AL will organize a discussion meeting at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on August 16 where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to present as the chief guest.
