UNB, Dhaka :
The government will pay compensation to the owners if any vehicle is damaged or torched on the streets during the countrywide indefinite blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan disclosed the decision, taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at a meeting with transport owners in the city on Friday afternoon.
“Insurance companies will pay compensation to the transport owners if any vehicle is damaged or torched on the streets during the blockade. If the vehicles are not under the insurance coverage, we’ll provide compensation,” he told UNB over phone.
The junior minister said, he discussed the matter with the leaders of different transport owners’ associations at Gabtali inter-district bus terminal on Friday afternoon.
He assured the transport owners of providing security for their vehicles if they ply those during the blockade. “I assured them that members of law enforcement agencies, including police, BGB, RAB and Ansar, will be on streets. They can take help from them whenever they need,” he added.
Asaduzzaman continued: “If they face any damage due to vandalism and torching of their vehicles, compensation will be given by the insurance companies or will be arranged by the Prime Minister.”
The state minister also gave transport owners phone numbers of the officials of different law enforcement agencies to seek instant help if they needed.
About the outcome of the meeting, he said the transport owners informed him that they have been facing financial losses due to the blockade programme.
The transport owners demanded interest exemption on the loan they have taken from different banks during the blockade programme.
