Govt to built modern sports complex for women: Muhith

The two-day long Luthfun Nesa Haque Bokul Inter-District Mohila Athletic Competition began on Tuesday at the Sultana Kamal Women’s Sports complex at Dhanmondi in the city.Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith MP amidst great enthusiasm among the women athletes inaugurated the meet as the chief guest.Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association Syed Shahed Reza, president of Bangladesh Women Sports Federation (BSWF) Rafia Akhtar Dolly, general secretary Qamrun Nahar Dana, convenor of sub-committee Hamida Begum and member secretary Farhad Jasmin Litty along with other executive committee members were present at inaugural ceremony.Finance Minister in his speech said that he was impressed with such a good number of participating members and lauded such good efforts taken by Bangladesh Women Sports Federation to find female talents from all walks of life through this competition. The chief guest was informed it by Dana that the land for BSWF was given by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in1972. Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Rafiaa Akhtar Dolly, Luthfun Nesa Bokul and others approached to Bangabandhu asking for a piece land for female sports persons. Sheikh Mujibur immediately termed this an important issue and ordered this land to be given to BSWF, which at that time belonged to WAPDA.Finance Minister said: ” This is indeed very pity that this venue is yet to be developed into an International Sports Complex. I was informed most of the internal venues are sub- standard therefore I will appeal to our honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a great patron of sports to come forward and make this venue into an international sports complex.” BOA secretary general Syed Shahed Reza said: ” This is indeed good to have competition like this to find talented female athletes but the most important thing is to nurture those talents so that in future, these athletes will laurel for country. I am sure our Prime Minister has done so much for female in sports will go all out to fulfill Bangabandhu’s dream for an modern sports complex.A total of two hundred players from 32 districts are taking part in the competition. The events are 100m sprint, 200m sprint, 400m sprint, discus throw, shot-put throw, javelin throw, long jump, high jump and 4x100m relay race.Participating district: Jessore, Sunamganj, Noakhali, Shariatpur, Chittagong, Laxmipur, Pabna, Chapainawabganj, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Chuadanga, Sherpur, Natore, Mymensingh, Jhenaidah, Madaripur, Bhola, Bandarbon, Rangamati, Rangpur, Panchagarh, Netrokona, Kishorganj, Sirajganj, Lalmonirhat, Narayanganj and Manikganj.
