The government has started introducing commercial sheep farming to explore the vast opportunity of boosting woolen fiber and elevating rural livelihood and produce more meat and milk, which will also help meet the country’s nutrition demand.
“We should develop commercial sheep rearing, which can help meet the nutrition demand besides providing valuable wool for expediting the huge opportunity of developing wool-based textile,” State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda said while addressing a seminar here on Thursday as chief guest.
The state minister said quick economic growth of the region can be possible through proper uses and development of livestock resources. The government has planned to poverty reduction and self-employment through the best uses of enormous opportunities of the sector.
Fisheries and Livestock Ministry organized the seminar titled “Native Sheep Improvement, Boosting Sheep-based Products and its Market creation” held at Nanking Darbar Hall here. Improvement and Conservation of Native Sheep in Society-based and Commercial Farms Project supported the seminar.
Joint Secretary of the ministry Kazi Washuddin, Project Director Habibur Rahman and Divisional Deputy Directors Dr Rejaul Islam and Mahbubur Rahman addressed the meeting as special guests with Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif in the chair.
During his keynote presentation, Kolyan Kumar fouzder, Chief Scientific Officer, highlighted the aspects of substantial and sustainable promotion of sheep and its species development.
Project Director Habibur Rahman told the meeting that the scientists of DLS and the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) have developed and produced different types of woolen fabrics and bed-sheet and suiting by using 30 per cent sheep wool, 30 per cent jute and 40 per cent cotton.
“Demand of these products is huge in local market that could be met by farming of sheep commercially,” Rahman said.
