Human rights activist Sultana Kamal on Friday said, the government is silent about protecting the Sundarbans.
The government has not taken any initiative in this regard. It even did not respond to the study reports submitted by the National Committee to Protect the Sundarbans.
Sultana Kamal said this in a press briefing at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) jointly organised National Committee to Protect the Sundarbans and Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) and Water Keepers Bangladesh.
The press conference was arranged to discuss the recent study report conducted by Environmental Science Department of Khulna University. The study said that the Pashur river had started eroding on account of industrial activities ahead of the operation of Rampal Power Plant Project.
Sultana Kamla accused the government of ignoring the recommendations of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO about saving Sundarbans, a world heritage site.
“We should perceive what will happen after the Rampal Power Plant Project goes to production,” she said.
The government will have to respect the recommendations of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO. All works near the Sundarbans will have to be stopped immediately in the greater interests of the nation, she added.
