Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Saturday accused the government of shrinking the space for holding rallies, processions and human chain. The party leaders say that the government has been working to bring back the one party BAKSAL rule.
“Whenever we want to arrange any rally or meeting, the government creates obstacles. We used to arrange rallies in the Paltan Maidan and the Muktangan, but the government has stopped that. Now they have made new rule that the police permission must be needed to arrange any rally,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He said it while addressing a joint meeting of Dhaka city unit of the BNP in the Bhasani Auditorium at Nayapaltan to discuss about the observance of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day on November 7.
Mirza Fakhrul said, his party has sent a letter to the police for permission to hold a rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan on the day. “We hope that the authority will give us permission to hold the rally,” he said.
Mirza Abbas, the Standing Committee Member and Convener of the city unit of the BNP presided over the programme.
Mirza Abbas said, the planned rally will be the biggest ever gathering.
BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, central leaders Abdus Salam and Abul Khair Bhuiyan, among others, were present.
Meanwhile Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in another discussion meeting said, there has been no democracy in Bangladesh for 10 years. He also labeled the government as ‘undemocratic’ forces and warned of popular movement.
‘There has been no democracy in the country for 10 years from October 28, 2006 to till date. The ruling Awami League has snatched away people’s right to speech. They have shut down 37 online news portals just in one day,’
Mirza Fakhrul said.
Labour Party, an ally of the BNP led 20-party alliance, arranged the programme at Segunbagicha’s Kochi-Kacha Building auditorium, marking its 39th founding anniversary.
Meanwhile BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain pleaded for a neutral search committee to form next election commission.
“We don’t want a partisan search committee to get next EC. We have heard that the government plans to hold a pre-arranged election. The people of Bangladesh must foil that,” he said.
The ’90’s DUCSU and a All-party students unity arranged the meeting demanding withdrawal of all cases against BNP Chief Begum Khaleda Zia and Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman.
The Convener of the organisation Aman Ullah Aman presided over the programme. BNP leader Khairul Kabir Khokon, Habibur Rahman and ABM Mosharraf Hossain, among others, were also present.
