Govt revamps programmes for poverty reduction to 13pc

The government has undertaken various programmes for reducing poverty level to 13 per cent within 2021.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith in his budget proposal for 2017-18 fiscal year (FY18) said the government is providing different allowances to the people under social safety-net programmes under 28 ministries.
The government is carrying out its safety net campaign across the country through providing old-age allowance, widow allowance, allowance for divorced women, disabled allowance, distressed women allowance, poor pregnant women allowance, subsidised open market sale, vulnerable group development (VGD), vulnerable group feeding (VGF), test relief (TR) and food for work programme.
The allowances including destitute, underprivileged, widows, and elderly poor, have been brought under the government’s old-age and other social safety net allowances for integrating the beneficiaries into the mainstream of society through improving their livelihoods.
Moreover, various projects under the social safety net have been undertaken to improve the lifestyle of the old-aged, distressed, disabled, financially insolvent people, widows, divorced and pregnant women.
The Social Welfare ministry is playing the leading role to decreasing the poverty level to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within 2019.
The government has planned to make a law to introduce a mandatory pension scheme in the private sector which will provide a comprehensive pension system for the elderly people in the private sector like that in the public sector.
The government has decided to rehabilitate 2.80 lakh homeless families in 2019 through the ongoing Ashrayan project to improve the living of landless and homeless families by focusing on human resource development.
In order to increase the social security coverage and improve living standards of poor the government would raise the number of recipients of old age allowances from 31.50 lakh to 35 lakh, the number of widow and oppressed women by 10 percent to 12.65 lakh, increase the rate of allowance for financially insolvent disabled persons to Tk 700.
