BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has asked the government to take the responsibility of each killing that took place in the last few days, although the head of the government is trying to evade that.
In a statement, sent to the media on Tuesday, the BNP chief also expressed deep concern over the killings, including the killings of LGBT magazine Roopbaan’s Editor Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Tonoy.
Khaleda Zia harshly condemned the Monday’s double murder at Kalabagan in the capital, and the killings of Kashimpur jail guard Rustom Ali, Rajshahi University teacher Rezaul and the others. She blamed the Awami League (AL) led government for the killings and separate attacks in the country.
Alleging that people’s security, social rights and democracy are endangered, Khaleda Zia said: “As the ruling government does not have public support, it is considering killings as an way to stay in power.”
“It is the nature of Awami League to manufacture unbelievable stories about any killings for their own interest. The party also spreads propaganda one after another about the murder incidents of foreigners. They try to put the blame on the opposition party,” said the BNP chief.
Khaleda Zia demanded the arrest and punishment of Xulhaz and Tonoy’s killers.
Meanwhile, the BNP hit back at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her comment that BNP-Jamaat were involved in the killings of Xulhaz and his friend at Kalabagan.
Accusing BNP-Jamaat nexus, Sheikh Hasina on Monday said the BNP-Jamaat clique had been engaged in ‘clandestine killing’ to destabilize the country. BNP Senior Joint Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed at a press conference in the party’s Nayapaltan central office criticised the PM for her comments. He questioned how could the PM blame BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami for the double murder before starting of investigation process? “The legal process is yet to start. How does she (Hasina) blame BNP so quickly,” Rizvi Ahmed said.
