UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Wednesday alleged the government is trying to hush up the country’s serious flood situation in 24 districts by remaining silent about it as it has no accountability to people.
The party urged the government to take necessary steps, including deployment of armed forces to tackle the devastating flood and mitigate the affected people’s sufferings.
“Over a crore people in 24 districts have remained marooned by floodwater. The government should have given due attention to the problem. But it’s a regrettable that as the regime is not elected by people and it has no accountability to people and is trying to hush up the issue,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Ripon deplored that even not a minister visited any flood-affected area though people are leading an inhuman life in the 24 flood-hit districts for lack of relief, pure drinking water and medicine. “We strongly condemn the government’s inaction and silence over the flood issue.”
The BNP leader alleged that the ministers are not concentrating on performing their ministerial duties as they are busy suppressing the opposition. Referring to media reports, he lamented that Disaster Management and Relief Minister instead of ensuring relief for the victims advised journalists not to highlight the flood issue.
He further said, “Under the circumstances, we call upon the government please evacuate the flood-hit people and stand by them with necessary relief materials. Send medical teams and medicines in the disaster-hit areas as waterborne diseases are spreading fast in those areas.”
