Staff Reporter :The government is now waiting for the copy of the judgment of the Supreme Court, as the authorities concerned will take step to execute the death sentence awarded to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman after obtaining the copy. Law Minister Advocate Anisul Huq on Tuesday said that the death sentence of Kamaruzzaman will be executed after obtaining the copy of the verdict of the apex court. “Let us see what the court does. We are waiting for the Supreme Court’s directive,” he said. The minister was talking to reporters after a meeting with State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker at his ministry. Replying to a question, he said that they did not discuss about the execution of the verdict in the meeting. He, however, said that an elaborate discussion was held about some important cases. The law and order situation in the country was also discussed. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on November 3 upheld the International Crimes Tribunal-2 judgment that had sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death for committing crimes against humanity during the War for Independence of Bangladesh in 1971.Lawyers of the prosecution team said that the tribunal would issue the death warrant to the convict after getting the SC’s verdict. Then the government will execute the verdict. However, the defence lawyers argued for Kamaruzzaman’s right to appeal for review and they would go for the review within a month after obtaining the verdict’s copy.
