The present government has increased climate relevance allocation by 55 percent in last three years to Taka 14,633 crore from Taka 9,404 crore.
The government has proposed Taka 14,633 crore for 2017-18 fiscal year that is more Taka 1,000 crore compared with Taka 13,773 crore allocation in FY 2016-17 made for facing adverse effect of climate change. The allocation was Taka 9,404 crore during 2014-15 fiscal year.
This was revealed in a book titled “Climate Protection and Development:
Budget Report 2017-18, placed by Finance Minister AMA Muhith while he was placing the proposed budget last week.
The report said the climate change allocation in development budget increased by 117.35 percent since FY 2014-15 while non-development budget by 29.33 percent during the same period.
The climate relevance allocation was made targeting six ministries – water resources, agriculture, disaster management and relief, environment and forests, local government division and primary and mass education.
In his budget speech, the finance minister said Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries facing negative impact of global warming and climate change.
“We are aware of this issue and we have already formulated strategies to tackle this change and are drafting a Country Investment Plan (CIP) as a part of our preparation. On the basis of the CIP, we will take steps to ensure safe and sustainable environment,” he said.
In FY 2016-17, the Muhith said 44 new and two revised projects have been adopted under the ‘Climate Change Trust Fund? which has been established with the government’s own resources.
“We are formulating a Road Map to develop National Adaptation Plan (NAP) in a bid to adopt comprehensive and long term adaptation strategy and actions against climate change,” he said.
