Govt hikes rawhide prices ahead of Eid

The government has fixed the new prices of the salt-applied sacrificial animal’s rawhides like cows at Tk 47-52 per square foot in Dhaka and TK40-44 per square foot across the country on the occasion 0f the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
The prices of rawhide per square foot of cow has been increased by Tk 7 this year while that of goat by Tk 3.
However, a total of 1.21 crore adult cows, goats, buffaloes and sheep are ready to sacrifice in the country on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Tuesday announced the new rates of rawhides of the sacrificial animals at a virtual meeting ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha to be observed on July 10.
 The prices of the salt-applied rawhides of cows last year were Tk 40-45 per square foot in Dhaka and Tk 33-37 per square foot across the country.
 Meanwhile, the price of goat hide has been set at Tk 18-20 per square foot while it is Taka 12-14 per square foot of female goat hide across the country.
 The price of goat hide in the last year was set at Taka 15-17 per square foot while it was Taka 12-14 per square foot of female goat hide across the country.
Tipu Munshi said the old stock of leather, current global supply and demand, local and international market price, export situation and the opinion from all stakeholders have been considered in fixing the prices.
 He urged the businessmen to ensure procurement of rawhides in the country with the government fixed price.
 The commerce minister said, the poor have their just rights in the rawhides while the orphanages, madrashas also collect rawhides since poor students study there. Side by side, Anjuman Mofidul Islam also collects such rawhides, he added.
 “So, it’s our duty that they get the just price of rawhides and we’ll have to ensure that. We’ll also have to remain aware so that no rawhide is spoiled and damaged,” he said.
 He mentioned that all the necessary preparations have been taken this time to properly preserve, buy and sell rawhides centering the Holy Eid Ul Azha.
 Besides, he said there is a stock of sufficient salt in the country urging all to preserve the rawhides by using salt in due time.
 Tipu urged buyers to buy necessary salt while paying hasil in the cattle market.
 Apart from this, he said that the field administration has been directed to assist the concerned businesses hoping that there would be no problem this time in collection, preserving, buying and selling of rawhides of sacrificial animals.
Senior Secretary of the Public Security Division Md Akhter Hossain, Senior Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Tapan Kanti Ghosh, Industries Secretary Zakia Sultana, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Md Mokbul Hossain and Bangladesh Tanners Association President Shahin Ahmed spoke, among others, at the meeting.
