Total of 1378 teachers will be recruited for the government secondary schools under the supervision of Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) with a view to overcoming teachers’ crisis.
The Education Ministry officials said there is teachers’ crisis in as many as 347 government secondary schools. The fresh recruitment initiative will help reduce the crisis.
Professor Abdul Mannan, Director (Secondary) of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), said the DSHE sent a letter to the ministry detailing gravity of the crisis due to shortage of teachers and necessity of appointment of new teachers.
“The Education Ministry responded to the DSHE’s request and asked the BPSC for arranging the recruitment. Hopefully the BPSC will publish a notice by the next week in this regard,” he said.
“The teachers will get second class status,” he said.
According to the DSHE there are 347 government secondary schools in the country. A total of 109 posts of headmaster, 463 posts of assistant headmaster out of 471, 1556 posts of assistant teachers out of 10,344 are vacant. The BPSC recommended appointing some teachers from the cadres of 36th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS). The BPSC will hold examination soon.
On the other hand, the Education Ministry introduced four more subjects in the curriculum of the secondary level education in 2012. The new subjects are ICT, Exercise, Fine Arts and Technical Education. But no teacher has yet been appointed for the new subjects.
Some teachers died and someone went on retirement. As a result, the schools have been undergoing tremendous teachers’ suffering, the ministry sources said.
The ministry officials said, the quality of secondary level education at government high schools slipped due to the teachers’ crisis. Many of the teachers left the job after getting first class government jobs. As a result, it was very difficult to make the gap, they observed.
