Govt has tremendous success in Shipping Dept, says DG

Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, Director General of the Department of Shipping under the Ministry of Shipping, said, the government has achieved tremendous success in Shipping in last two years.
“A good number of unemployed cadets got jobs arranged by the
Shipping Department, digitalisation of the department and seafarers’ access to the Indian and the United Arab Emirates Ports are the vast achievement of the Ministry,” Ariful Islam said.
The DG of the Department of Shipping said this while talking with the reporters’ in his office on Thursday.
He said, there were 1500 unemployed cadets (Passed out from different Marine Academies) in 2017. Now everyone is working at onboard foreign going merchant ships at home and abroad.
“We have introduced printed Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) instead of hand written CDC. As a result, fake entry of seaman has been stopped and can check the authenticity of any document,” he said.
Seafarers have been provided digital ID. Now they can face the immigration easily. Earlier it was paper document, the Shipping DG said.
Ariful Islam said, ship owners can apply for registration through inline. In this way the department succeeded to reduce pressure on it.
Organogram of the Department of Shipping was changed with adequate equipment and manpower, he said.
“Measures have been taken to update Inland Shipping Ordinance 1976, Flag Vessel Protection Ordinance 1982 and the Light House Act 1927. Necessary
translation and updating works have already been done and awaiting to be placed in the cabinet,” he said.
With combined effort of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Shipping Visa issue for Dubai has been resolved. Bangladeshi seafarers are now allowed to sign on and sign off from the ports of United Arab Emirates,” Ariful Islam said.
Visa issues for Bangladeshi seafarers at Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar has also been resolved very recently, he said.
