Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan yesterday said the government had no role in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, which was settled in court convicting BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and its Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman.
“The case was filed during the last caretaker government’s regime. There was no role of the present Awami League government over the case rather it provided necessary legal assistance in this regard,” he said while addressing a function at Achmat Ali Khan Stadium here in the morning.
The Shipping Minister said Khaleda Zia got punishment as she did many mistakes in politics.
She (Khaleda) was sentenced to five years imprisonment in the graft case, he said, but her punishment may increase up to 10 years if she appeals in the High Court.
Noting that democracy can never be protected through burning people alive and beating them, Shajahan Khan said, adding that there is no one to stage demonstration on street demanding the release of Khaleda Zia, which proves that people do not support her.
Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) president Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin, additional deputy commissioner Syed Faruq Ahmad, superintendent of police Mohammad Sarwar Hossain, Sadar Upazila chairman Pavelur Rahman Shafiq Khan, Madaripur municipality mayor Khalid Hossain Iyad and District Sports Organisation general secretary Obaydur Rahman were, among others, present on the occasion.
