Govt for renewable energy to reduce Green House Gas

The government has put emphasis on development of the sustainable renewable energy access at remote areas aimed at reducing the annual growth rate of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Thursday said that the government established Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) to ensure sustainable renewable energy for the poor for national development.
“Our aim is to develop an optimum power development plan through fuel diversification and coal based generation capacity by 2030,” he said while inaugurating an Inception Workshop on Development of Sustainable Renewable Energy Power Generation (SREPGen) as the chief guest at Bijoy Hall of Bydut Bhaban in the city.
Chaired by Tapos Kumar Roy, chairman of SREDA and NPD, SREGen project, the workshop was also addressed, among others, by power division secretary of the ministry Monowarul Islam, Pauline Tamesis, country director of UNDP and Alamgir Hossain, programme analyst of UNDP-Bangladesh.
The state minister said the government has empathized on renewable energy and plan to generate 800MW electricity from renewable energy within 2015.
The government has undertaken a plan to install solar power panels in different areas to generate electricity, adding, “The government has set up the goal of providing electricity to all by 2020 and to ensure reliable and quality supply of electricity at a reasonable and affordable price.”
He said sustainable social and economic development depends on adequate power generation capacity of a country and development of renewable energy (RE) is one of the important strategies.
The government has taken a systematic approach towards renewable energy development. In line with the approach, the government is committed to facilitate both public and private sector investment in RE projects, he said.
Project Manager of SREPGen Monwar Hasan Khan presented the keynote paper which elaborately highlighted various sector of the project. He said the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Bangladesh Government would jointly implement the project.
Green Energy Fund would finance US$ 4.07 million, while Government of Bangladesh will give US$ 1.03 million for implementation of the project during 2014 to 2018, Khan added.
