Awami League President Sheikh Hasina’s government is enough for a complete investigation into all the deaths related to the ongoing drive against narcotics, party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader said yesterday.
“European Union is our friend and also development partner. They can expect the investigation but Sheikh Hasina’s government is enough for the purpose,” he said this while addressing a seminar at the National Museum’s auditorium in Dhaka.
The European Union mission in Dhaka in a statement yesterday said, “We expect the authorities to ensure that all incidents involving the deaths of alleged criminal suspects are investigated fully in accordance with due processes.”
Responding to a question in this regard, Quader also road transport and bridges minister, said the alleged murder of Teknaf municipality councillor Akramul Haque is under investigation.
“We are investigating the death incident based on the allegations. And no one has anything to be over enthusiastic over the issue,” Quader said.
Trashing BNP’s allegation that the government is carrying out an operation against insignificant people like thieves, Quader said those who are involved in the drug treading within the BNP are being searched.
BNP has formed Dhaka north city unit committee with drug traders, addicts and terrorists, Quader said quoting a newspaper report.
“We are searching trace of those who are big fishes and who are small ones and where are they now,” the Awami League leader said.
Claiming that his party chief Sheikh Hasina did never compromise with any unethical practice, Quader said she (Hasina) would take tough action if any innocent people are targeted in the ongoing anti-narcotic drive.
“She would not allow the offenders be spared,” Quader said warning that a stern action would be taken if Akram has met the tragic end of his life without any justification.
“Trial is a must if it is proved that Akram has been killed unjustly. We took the path with a strong commitment,” Quader said.
About the next general election, Quader said, there are 37 registered political parties in the country and of these 36 will take part in the next general election if BNP commits the same mistake that it did on January 5, 2014.
