Govt considering jackfruit export

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Saturday said the government is considering exporting jackfruit following bumper production of the seasonal fruit in the country during the current season.
The minister said this while inaugurating a three-day `Fruit Tree Fair’ at Pirgachha Upazila.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and Upazila administration jointly organized the fair at Pirgachha Upazila parishad ground with a view to encouraging people for planting more fruit bearing trees.
The minister said the country needs attain autarky in fruit production to meet up the nutrition demand of the people. Bangladesh has also immense scope for exporting many delicious varieties of fruits to earn foreign currency.
Tipu Munshi said, Bangladesh is now exporting rice and potato after meeting the local demand. With achieving self-reliance in food we should attain self-reliance in fruit production, he added.
The minister said the present government is extending all support to the farmers for mechanizing the agriculture and using latest technologies to boost up production of all crops.
Pirgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jasmine Prodhan was in the chair while Upazila Chairman Shah Md. Mahbubar Rahman, agriculture officers Shamimur Rahman and Lokam Alam, spoke, among others, on the occasion.
