Govt committed to protect rivers from further degradation

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, MP, here on Friday categorically said the government is pledged bound to protect country’s rivers from further degradation for preserving ecosystem and biodiversity. Terming the rivers as life he said there is no alternative to protect the rivers and the government is working relentlessly to attain the cherished goal.
He asked all the authorities concerned particularly Water Development Board, LGED, Roads and Highway to work together for the success of government endeavor. “We can’t let the rivers to die as those are interlinked with our living and livelihood,” he clarified.
The minister was addressing the first meeting of Rajshahi Divisional River Protection Committee held at Rajshahi Circuit House as the chief guest. State Minister for Water Resources Nazrul Islam, MP, spoke as special guest with Helaluddin Ahmed, Commissioner of Rajshahi division and president of the committee, in the chair.
Chairman of National River Protection Commission Ataharul Islam and its Member Md Alauddin also spoke giving an overview of the government’s river protection strategy and its implementation activities. Shajahan Khan told the meeting that the government will extend all sorts of cooperation towards bringing back navigability in the Baral River. Necessary measures were taken to remove and renovate the infrastructures like sluice gates on the river.”These sluice gates impede the natural flow of the river,” he said.
The minister said there was 24,400 kilometers of waterways in Bangladesh after the independence.
“It has now decreased to 3,000 kilometers only. The government is working to restore the natural flow of the waterways by dredging 65 rivers,” he added.
Shahjahan said Bangladesh is no more a bottomless basket. It will turn into a developed one by 2041, he added.
