BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy has accused the government and officials of the Bangladesh Bank of stealing Tk 800 crore from the central bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The party senior leader also demanded carrying out of a fair and credible investigation into the incident.
“Tk. 800 crore was stolen from Bangladesh Bank’s reserve account right away, not hacked. There is no scope of swindling out the money without involvement of key officials of the bank. No one could dare to plunder such a big amount without having link with the government and bank officials,” he came up with the allegation while speaking at a discussion on Saturday.
Jatiyatabadi Karmajibi Dal, a pro-BNP organisation, arranged the function at the Jatiya Press Club in the city to mark its ninth founding anniversary.
Demanding a fair and credible investigation into the incident, Gayeshwar said, “The Ministers, MPs and the bank officials who were behind the heist can be identified through a proper probe.”
BNP’s another standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed also accused officials of the central bank of involving in the heist.
“Such a big amount could not be swindled out without having link with the bank officials,” he said at a separate meeting at the Press Club yesterday.
Mashiur Rahman Jadu Miah Smriti Parishad arranged the discussion to mark the 37th death anniversary of Jadu Miah, a former senior minister.
BNP Vice-Chairman Abdullah-al-Noman, Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury of Gonoswasthya Kendro, Bangladesh NAP Chairman and Jadu Miah’s grand son Jebel Rahman Ghaani also spoke at the function with president of the organsiation Shamsul Haque in the chair.
Barrister Moudud said that Malaysia’s announcement of halting recruitment of Bangladeshi workers, UK’s ban on cargo and incident of stealing money from BB’s Reserve Account will affect the people adversely.
“The incidents are being happened one after another due to lack of accountability of the government. It seems that there is no government in the country,” he said.
Barrister Moudud and Gayeshwar also touched the country’s current situation, their party’s sixth national council and the upcoming UP polls.
Barrister Moudud said that there is no democracy in the country. “Fundamentalism, militancy and terrorism are arisen in absence of the democracy. We are seen existence of these,” he said.
About the upcoming Union Parishad polls, Gayeshwar alleged that the ruling party men established its unilateral supremacy in the election areas, as the Election Commission has failed to ensure a level-playing field.
About March 19 council, he said that their main target is to intensify the movement for the restoration of democracy through the council. Urging all to prepare for the council, he said, “This council is not for electing leaders. Rather, it will decide the action plan for BNP’s return to power.”
Speaking at a separate programme organised by the Jubo Dal at Nayapaltan, Gayeshwar said that his party is going to amend its constitution to define its Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman’s roles in the party.
Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman have been elected unopposed as Chairperson and senior Vice Chairman respectively. Their elections will be formally approved in the council.
According to the BNP’s Constitution, the senior vice chairman heads the party in the absence of the Chairperson. “As long as the Chairperson is present, Tarique Rahman remains inactive. We want to increase Tarique’s role and other specific tasks in the party,” Gayeshwar said.
