BSS, Rajshahi :
Speakers at a discussion here mentioned ensuring good governance in public services including the local government institutions (LGIs) is very vital for improving living and livelihood condition of the grassroots population.
They viewed all government and non-government organizations concerned should come forward and work together for making the LGIs fully functional, democratic and transparent entities.
The observations came in the inaugural session of a daylong divisional workshop titled “Consultation in Good Governance” held at Nanking Darbar Hall in the city yesterday.
Department of Development Studies in Dhaka University hosted the workshop under the ‘National Governance Assessment Framework, Bangladesh’. UNDP supported the meeting.
Additional Commissioner (General) of Rajshahi division Aminul Islam and Director of Local Government Division Shayam Kishore Roy addressed the session as chief and special guests respectively.
Additional Commissioner (Development and ICT) Jakir Hossain, Superintendent of Police Abdus Salam and Professor Kazi Maruful Islam and Professor Taibur Rahman from the development studies department also spoke.
The meeting was told that the government is going to formulate a National Governance Assessment Framework to encourage good governance in the public sector. Professor Maruful Islam said the framework will be prepared in consultation with the government officials, civil society and academicians.
“The initiative will work to ensure good governance,” Prof Maruf told the consultation on the SDG 16 (Sustainable Development Goals) in the Bangladesh Context: Peace and Security, Human Rights and Governance.
Chief Guest Aminul Islam said all the existing services being delivered towards the grassroots people need to be more coordinated and accelerated.
Many government and non-government organizations are now implementing projects for public welfare. So, there is no alternative to contributing to the empowerment of local citizens through a democratic, transparent, inclusive and effective local government system, he added.
