Give priority to extra-curricular activities apart from textbooks

THE State Minister for Public Administration has laid emphasis on extra-curricular activities besides regular textbooks, saying that extra-curricular activities play an important role to develop student’s mind as well as improve academic performance, foster interpersonal relationship, increase motivation and self-esteem. There is no doubt that only good academic results should not be the goal of any student. Rather it is very important to raise a student as a quality human being. In fact, there is no alternative to practice sufficient extra-curricular activities along with growing the habits of reading books for improving general knowledge.
If the good students use better strategies than for learning something from textbooks, they will be able to get better results in any exam of the practical field. A good student is one who is not good in lesson but who is disciplined, maintains good behaviour and performs well in social works. We don’t say that a good student is one who is teacher’s favourite, always gets first position in the class exams and remain very busy in homework. He is the good student in our eyes who is easy enough with extra-curricular activities – may be a sportsman or a singer or a painter or have huge knowledge over contemporary science and technology. Side by side, the students also should get proper training on morality. Presently, it is seen that even school students remain busy on smart phones and tabs in searching different videos on YouTube or playing games on the mini screen. They even hate to join any physical movement like playing soccer or cricket in the field. In this backdrop, extra-curricular should be an important part of high school life. It will help them to fight in their practical life. The motto of education shouldn’t be only getting a job with monthly salary.
Government must pay attention on the real education of our children and should not implement their mere political ideology in the name of textbook lessons.
