‘Girls urged to read more books to unearth potentials’

Putting emphasis on ensuring equal rights of boys and girls in every sector, Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury urged girl child to read more books and realize their potentials so that they can make themselves as the worthy citizens of the country. “We are celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child. I do agree with the theme -‘Girl Force: Unscripted and Unstoppable’ and welcome all to this celebration. I think this is our responsibility to remove gender barriers,” he said this on Tuesday while addressing as the chief guest at a programme, marking the International Girl Child Day 2019.
Room to Read, a non-government organisation working to increase literacy and girls’ education rate, organised the event at Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium in the city.
Mentioning that women are presented in wrong way, he said companies prefer to present women in glamorous way, they prefer to present air hostess in their advertisement, but people know that female folks are also performing their duties as pilots.
“We should not limit girls’ thinking. Woman can do all the things despite a widespread notion that physical strength is a deciding factor. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the example for women and girls when it comes to leadership and more,” he added.
Director General of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Professor Dr. Syed Md. Golam Faruk and Chairman of Bangladesh Shishu Academy Lucky Enam spoke at the event as the special guests.
Country Director of Room to Read, Bangladesh Rakhi Sarkar delivered the welcome speech.
The first woman, who travelled to 135 countries across the world with flag of Bangladesh, Nazmun Nahar and actor Banya Mirza, among others, were present on the occasion.
Every year, the International Day of the Girl Child is observed on October 11.
Currently, Room to Read is directly supporting over 5,000 girls of 32 secondary schools in Dhaka, Natore and Sirajganj. In Dhaka, the organisation is working with 13 secondary schools and supporting approximately 1,700 girls.
