A teenaged schoolgirl, who was allegedly set on fire accusing her of stealing a mobile phone in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi district on Friday night, succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Saturday.  
Aziza Khatun, 14, a Class-V student and daughter of one Abdus Sattar, was admitted to the burn unit of DMCH with 96 percent burn injuries and succumbed around 5:00am, said Partha Sankar Pal, Resident physician of Burnt and Plastic Surgery Unit of the hospital.
 “Some miscreants in presence of Beauty Begum, an aunt of the deceased, took me half a kilometer away from the house around 8:00pm on Friday and set her on fire by pouring kerosene,”, said Aziza prior to her death as quoted by the father.
Aziza said that she didn’t steal the phone, the father quoted her further.
Abdus Sattar, father of the deceased, said, “One of Aziza’s aunts lost a mobile phone some days ago and suspected her of stealing it. He and his wife were absent while Aziza was forcefully taken away from their home in Khoinokur village in Shibpur.”
The victim’s father claimed that Beauty Begum ‘had instigated a gang of rogues to burn Aziza.
A neighbour and her relatives accused Aziza of stealing a mobile phone set and threatened to burn her alive by pouring kerosene if she did not return the phone within a week, said the victim’s brother Sujon.
Aziza was first taken to a local hospital and later shifted to DMCH as her condition deteriorated where she died, Sujon added. Sibpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Syeduzzaman said that some relatives of the girl were involved in setting the girl on fire.
“We will take legal action against the culprits,” he said.
However, lodging a case in this connection was under processing till filing of this report around 8:00pm on Saturday.
