A woman allegedly killed her step-daughter in the city’s Jatrabari area early Friday. The deceased has been identified as Maimuna, 6, daughter of Abdul Razzaq, a shopkeeper and inhabitant of Madaripur district.
Police have arrested Sumaiya Islam Sharmin, second wife of Razzaq, in this connection for interrogation.
Quoting the family members and locals, Jatrabari Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abani Shankar Kar said that police recovered the body from a water container inside the toilet of a building around 10:00am.
The grand-mother of the deceased first noticed the body inside the water container around 9:00am and started crying. Hearing her cry, locals rushed to the spot and informed the matter to the police, the OC said.
The police official said that Maimuna had been living with her father, three-month-old sister, step-mother and grand-mother for a few years on the third
floor of a building at Dholpur in Jatrabari.
She usually sleeps in her grandmother’s room. But on the fateful night her step-mother asked her to sleep in her room as her father left for his village home on Thursday, the OC said.
We suspect that step-mother Sumaiya killed the girl outs of some sorts of vengeance. The left wrist of the victim was found to have been broken, the police official said.
