Ginger cultivation exceeds target in Dupchanchia

Getting repeated bumper production and fair market price, ginger cultivation has exceeded target this season in Dupchanchia upazila of Bogura district this season.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official source we have fixed a target to bring some 4 hectares of land under ginger cultivation this season but the farmers have taken over 5 hectares of land.
Good number extreme poor farmers of Gunaher, Talora, Zianagar, Chamrul and sadar union under the upazila had become self-reliant growing the spice last year.
They are to spend approximately Tk 10000 to 12000 to grow a bigha of land and they get over seventeen maunds yield from the same land. Each maund of ginger is now being sold at Tk 3280 to 3300 in the retail market while Tk 2500 to 2600 in the wholesale market.
Farmer Lokman Hossain under the upazila said he has cultivated ginger on 4 decimal of land spending Tk 500 and hopes to sell at Tk 5000 this season. He had made over Tk 12000 from the cropland last year due to fair selling price.
In a recent visit at Sukhangari village nearby Sajapur area under Dupchanchia upazila the correspondent found the farmers are passing busy time to take frequent care at the crop filed defying rough weather aiming bumper production.
Farmer Mazibur Rahman, 54, at Sukhangari village said, he cultivate zinger on 4 decimal of land every year and got good yield. Abundant rain is dangerous for the crops, he added.
Deputy Director of DAE Nikhil Chandra Biswas said the extreme poor peasants of the upazila mostly depend on agriculture based rabi and Khorip crops specially ginger cultivation. We provide all sort of logistic support among the eager farmers, he added.
