The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved the ‘Construction of Ghorashal 365 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant’ Project involving Tk 2,511.97
crore in a bid to meet the growing demand of power.
The approval came from the 18th ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year (2013-14) held at the NEC conference room in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Commission member Hedayet Ullah Al Mamun informed that a total of four development projects involving Tk 2,793 crore were approved on Tuesday.
“Of the total cost of four projects, Tk 913.82 crore will come from the government exchequer, Tk 1,766.03 crore as project assistance while Tk 113.19 crore from the organization’s own fund,” he said.
Planning Ministry sources said that the Power Division under the Energy, Power and Mineral Resources Ministry will implement the Ghorashal Power Plant project to be completed by June 2016 at Ghorashal in Narsingdi. Natural gas will be used as fuel in the plant.
Of the overall cost of Tk 2,511.97 crore for the Ghorashal 365 MW Combined
Cycle Power Plant Project, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China will provide Tk 1,653.19 crore as project assistance while the government will provide Tk 745.05 crore and the Power Development Board (PDB) the remaining amount of Tk 113.73 crore.
The day’s ECNEC meeting gave nod to a project, titled ‘Establishment of Autistic Academy’ at a cost of Tk 54.11 crore to bring the autistic children into the mainstream education system.
Directorate General of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) under the Ministry of Education will set up the Academy in the capital by December 2016 with the cost entirely borne from the government fund.
The ECNEC meeting also approved the ‘Establishment of National Institute of Advanced Practice Nurses in Bangladesh’ project involving Tk 128 crore with a view raise the skills of the nurses trainers as well as to groom skilled nurses to enrich the healthcare services considering the growing global demand.
The Institute, to be set up at Mugda in the capital under the supervision of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry, will be constructed by June 2018. Of the total project cost, KOICA will provide Tk 112.84 crore while the rest Tk 15.16 crore will come from the government exchequer.
The economic body of the country also approved the establishment of National Science and Technology Building at a cost of Tk 99.50 crore to be entirely borne by the government to further flourish science and technology related activities in the country.
National Museum of Science & Technology and Department of Public Works will jointly implement the project expected to be completed by June 2016.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Planning Commission members and concerned secretaries were present in the meeting.
