Manikganj Correspondent :
Water of Kaliganga and Ichamati river is increasing rapidly. At the same time, there has been a breach in some place along the river bank. Manikganj district’s oldest traditional Ghior hat is feared to disappear into the river. Already, some houses, shops and crops have been lost in the river.
Some of them are living a subhuman life by taking shelter in other people’s houses with their families and cows-goats, goats-chickens etc.
Besides, some parts of Rasulpur, Kusta, Milegi villages adjacent to Ghior Hat, many culverts, bridges, schools, colleges, graveyards, Shammanghat, mosques, temples, many crop lands are under threat. A portion of Ghior’s cattle market has already disappeared into the river. If no effective measures are taken to prevent the destruction, the rest of hat area will also disappear into the river.
The locals are demanding immediate intervention from the higher authorities to protect the area including the hut by constructing a barricade here.
GO bags are being thrown in the river to prevent erosion under the initiative of Ghior upazila administration.
