The labourers of 16 river ghat ( river berth) in Karnaphuli river resumed their duties from Saturday afternoon following the assurance by the leaders of the Chittagong chamber of commerce & Industry .
The ghat workers enforced strike from Thursday demanding their 9-point demands including hike of wages of the day labourers. Joint secretary of Ghat Sramik Union Abul Hossain told that a meeting was held in between workers and chamber leaders at chamber house and assured them to fulfill their demands. As such, workers resumes duty from afternoon of Saturday. Meanwhile CCCI sources said following the work suspension by the ghat workers in a number of river berths, the unloading of cargos from mother vessels in outer berth remained suspended .
The suspension of loading, unloading in river berths and unloading from vessels at outer berth, the prices of the essential commodities go up in local market, different sources said. In the meeting, lawmaker MA Latif MP, chamber President Mahbubul Alam, vice president Jamal Ahmed, labour leader Safar Alai , ghat contractors Abul Hashem and Abu Taiyub were present
The meeting decides to increase wages of labourers by more 90 paisa in90 kgs bags and 50 paisa in 50Kgs bags which will be affected from current months, sources said.
