Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said getting safe drinking water is a fundamental right of the country’s people.
“There is no alternative to safe drinking water to protect the health from different diseases. But it is difficult to ensure safe drinking water for all in Bangladesh, a country with huge population” he told the inaugural session of a seminar on ‘Drinking Water Safety: Priorities for Achieving the SDG.’
Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) and World Health Organization (WHO) jointly organized the event.
The minister said the government is working relentlessly to combat the crisis of safe drinking water.
“We will have to ensure the safe drinking water for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). There are 87 percent reliable water sources in Bangladesh, which is a great achievement for the country to attain the SDGs,” he added.
Talking about the different initiatives of the present government in ensuring safe drinking water, Mosharraf said, “Now we supply 80 percent water from ground water source and 20 percent from surface water source, resulting the layer of water come down”.
For this reason, he said, “We decided to supply 80 percent water from surface water source and 20 percent from ground water source, if needed.”
The Seventh Five Year Plan has already been taken on National Water Security Framework to achieve the SDGs, he added.
The government is committed to ensure safe drinking water and healthy sanitation for the country’s people by 2021, he said.
Chief Engineer of the department Md Wali Ullah presided over the function while Additional Secretary of LGD Nasrin Akter and WHO Representative in Bangladesh Dr Navaratnasamy Paranietharan addressed the function as special guests.
