German Envoy to Bangladesh Achim Tröster on Wednesday said that he was dissatisfied at the recent comment of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) following his recent meeting with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“I am somewhat dissatisfied with the comment made by the BNP leaders for quoting me on the human rights situation and the election of Bangladesh. During the closed-door meeting on March 17, we had talks about various issues of Bangladesh,” he added.
The German Ambassador said this at the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Bangladesh (DCAB) Talks in the Jatiya Press Club in the capital. DCAB President Rezaul Karim Lotus and its General Secretary AKM Moinuddin also spoke on the occasion.
About the meeting with BNP leaders, Achim Tröster said, “I along with German deputy ambassador paid a courtesy call to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir and its leader Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury. But I am somewhat dissatisfied with what the BNP leaders said in the media by quoting me.”
“I have been quoted that I am deeply anxious about the human rights situation and the election of Bangladesh. If I have anything to say about something, I can do it myself. I don’t see any necessity of the third party to talk on behalf of me,” he noted.
About German’s stance on human rights, the German Envoy said that the foreign policy of German upholds the human rights.
“We have continuous meeting with the government where we talk about our observations on the human rights situation in Bangladesh. In addition to the bilateral meetings, we discuss on the human rights situation in the forums of the United Nations,” he continued.
On March 17, German Envoy had a two-hour long closed-door meeting with the BNP leaders where they talked about different issues of Bangladesh including human rights, elections, and rule of law.
After the meeting, BNP standing committee member Amir Khashru briefed the journalists about the outcome of the meeting with German Envoy.
