UNB, Dhaka :
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday vacated its order staying the High Court bail granted to BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in a violence case, paving the way for his release.
A four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by
Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order following a petition filed by the BNP leader.
On December 26 last year, police filed a case with Turag Police Station against Gayeshwar on charge of giving order to produce three-hook barbed wire in order to carry out subversive activities. He was arrested on that night. On May 6, the High Court granted bail to the imprisoned BNP standing committee member in the case.
However, the Appellate Division on May 24 stayed the HC order following an appeal filed by the state.
Later, Gayeshwar’s counsel Nitai Roy Chowdhury prayed to the Appellate Division to vacate the order.
The BNP leader also secured bail in two more cases. Miscreants attacked Chhabi Biswas, the lawmaker from Netrakona-1 constituency, and set fire to his microbus in front of the Emergency unit of DhakaMedicalCollegeHospital on December 24 when BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia appeared before the special judge court set up at Alia Madrasah ground at Baskhibazar.
