30 others hurt in attack in Keraniganj: Gayeshwar assaulted

BNP candidate for Dhaka-3 constituency Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and 30 others were injured in a clash reportedly with the “ruling party men” during his campaign in Keraniganj area this evening.
Goyeshwar, also a standing committee member of BNP, sustained injuries in his head and now undergoing treatment at Islami Bank Central Hospital in Kakrail, Aminul Islam, the personal assistant of the BNP leader, said it to journalists last night.
The attackers also chopped and hurled brick chips at the BNP campaigners, he said.
BNP leaders and activists, including Advocate Sultan Naser, Advocate Kausar Ahmed, Ziauddin Pintu and Hazi Masum were among the injured.
The other injured were also undergoing treatment at the same hospital, he said.
Goyeshwar is contesting the polls with “Sheaf of Paddy” against his counterpart Awami League candidate Nasrul Hamid, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal candidate Mozibur Hawladar.
The clash ensured in Chunkutia area around 6:00pm when Goyeshwar along with his party men was heading towards Kadamtoli area where Awami League men were holding a meeting, police said.
BNP leaders claimed that the AL men carried out the attack when they were conducting a campaign there, leaving at least 30 BNP men including Goyeshwar injured.
Officer-in-charge (investigation) of South Keraniganj Police Station said he has heard that a clash between two groups of Awami League and BNP took place in Chunkutia area this evening.
“I am at a meeting now and thus I cannot provide further detail over the incident,” the OC said.
Sha Migan Shafiur Rahman, superintendent of police in Dhaka, told the reporter that Goyeshwar along with a procession was heading towards Kadamtoli area when Awami League candidate was holding a meeting there.
At one stage, the activists of both the parties started pelting brick chips at each other, the police official said.
“I heard that Goyeshwar sustained injuries during the incident,” the police official said.
Later, police brought the situation under control, he added.
