3 burnt hospitalised: Gas pipe explosion at kitchen

Three female domestic help sustained burn injuries in a gas explosion in a room on the second floor of Navana Tower in the city’s Gulshan area early Monday.
The victims were identified as Sharifa Akhtar, 18, Parvin Begum, 38, and Bedana Akhter, 20. They were admitted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said Partha Shankar Paul, Resident Physician of the hospital. Sharifa and Bedana have suffered 90 percent burns, while Parvin 20 percent, the doctor said.
Gulshan Police Station Inspector Md Salauddin said, “The three house helps received burn injuries as the gas explosion took place at a kitchen room on the second floor of the Navana Tower on Road No- 73 in Gulshan-2 around 6:30am.
He said that a gas stove exploded when one of the injured women was trying to light the stove for making breakfast in the flat, leaving trio injured.
Ataur Rahman, Duty Officer of Control Room of Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) Headquarters, said that they were yet to ascertain the cause of the blasts.
“There were no gas cylinders in the apartment. We suspect a malfunction on the pipe for supplying gas may have caused the fire, the fire service official said.
Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) Police Outpost In-Charge Bacchu Miah said that the local people recovered them from the flat and admitted to the Burn Unit of the DMCH.
Meanwhile, a fire incident took place in a 14-stroied under-construction building on the Road No- 106 in Gulshan-2 of the city on Monday afternoon, said Ataur Rahman, However, no casualities were reported in the incident.
