Garlic, one of the cash crops of the country, is being cultivated commercially at Jhapa Union in Monirampur upazila, which is potential agricultural hub of Jessore district.
Since the past few years, garlic cultivation saw bumper production which encouraged the farmers to continue its cultivation and as a result this year farmers are cultivating about 40 hectares of land to produce the one of the most popular bulb crops.
Visiting Hanua, Chandipur, Khalia Helanchi villages the UNB correspondent found farmers passing busy time in taking care of their garlic fields where the green leaves of the plants are strewn all over.
According to the farmers, the garlic plants have already been around three months old and will be ready for harvesting within 10 to 15 days.
Abdul Kader, a local farmer said, they have been gaining profit through garlic production from the last few years.
Seeing their success, many other farmers of the area became enthusiastic about garlic cultivation, he added.
It costs about Tk18,000 to Tk 20,000 for cultivation of per bigha land whereas the produced garlics in favourable weather can be sold at Tk30,000 to Tk35,000.
Polash Sarker, deputy assistant agriculture officer of Agriculture Extension Department, told UNB that because of the utmost sincerity of the farmers and favourable weather 40 hectares land of garlic is being cultivated this year.
In the next season, the cultivation might be doubled, he added.
However, garlic, which is one of the must spices used in dishes has a huge demand both in the country and abroad, especially in Asian region.
