Staff Reporter :
The leaders of Ganasanghati Andolan on Sunday urged people irrespective of political ideologies and professions to oppose Digital Security Act.
Addressing a press briefing at the party headquarters in Dhaka, the party’s acting Executive Coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel said, Section 32
would block investigative journalism against corrupt government officials.
Amid widespread criticism, The Parliament passed the new law on security on September 19.
He criticised the Act’s Section 43 which empowers police to harass both political and social activists without warrant. Rubel informed that at least 1,417 people had been detained under the ICT Act between 2012 and June of 2017.
‘Sixty-five per cent of the cases were filed under the controversial Section 57,’ he said.
The party’s Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki said, the government seems to be anxious of future mass upsurge due to the contemporary social anguish and the ruling elites’ undemocratic election campaigns.
The party’s central leaders Firoz Ahmed, Taslima Akhter, Bachchu Bhuiyan, Monir Uddin Pappu and Dipak Ray, among others, were present.
