The overall flood situation in the Karotoa and Ghaghot river basin areas under Palashbari, Gobindaganj, Sadullapur and sadar upazilas of the district improved further in last 24 hours ending at 9 am on Tuesday.
Executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here Mokhlasur Rahman said the water level of the Karotoa river decreased by 20 cm at Katakhali Bridge point near Gobindaganj upazila, while the Ghaghot declined by 8 cm at New Bridge Road point here during the period.
The Karotoa river was still flowing 68 cm above its danger level and the Ghaghot 8 cm below its danger level at that points on Tuesday morning, he said.
The roads and the homesteads of a number of unions of the upazilas have been submerged and more than 70 thousands people have been marooned.
The Gobindaganj upazila health complex and upazila headquarters are still under knee deep water, disrupting services to the people.
Many people have taken shelter on the higher places and academic institutions with domestic animals and poultry birds and were passing tough times.
Some 17160 hectares of T-Aman paddy land went under flood water making the affected farmers more worried about their crops and their food security.
Deputy Director (DD) of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Krishibid Masudur Rahman said if the seedlings remained under the water for 8-10 days more, it would be damaged.
In this situation, the farmers will have to cultivate early varieties of robi crops like mustard, wheat and maize including winter vegetables on their land, he said.
The fishes worth over TK 1.20 crore from 250 ponds have been washed away. As a result, the fish farmers are in more anxieties with payment of the loan taken from the commercial banks, said district fisheries officer Abdud Dayal Dulu.
Over 100 km of rural roads of the upazilas had been damaged due to the flood, said Ahsan Kabir, executive engineer of LGED.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin visited the flood affected areas and distributed relief materials to the victims to mitigate their sufferings.
Gobindaganj upazila project implementation officer Md. Zahirul Islam said relief materials including dried food were so far distributed to 3900 flood affected people of the upazila.
Palashbari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kamruzzaman Mohammad said a total of 3000 flood affected families got relief materials from the government.
Sadullapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Nabi Neuoaj said over 500 people got relief materials from the upazila administration.
