The leaseholder of Gabtoli cattle market has been fined Tk10 lakh for not complying with health safety guidelines issued by the government amid the pandemic.
A mobile court fined the cattle market authorities following a visit by Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam on Monday.
The DNCC mayor expressed his dissatisfaction with the overall hygiene situation and maintenance of social distancing at the cattle market.
After inspecting the market, Mayor Atiqul Islam told reporters the city corporation had set up antigen testing booths at each of the nine cattle markets under DNCC for the first time.
Till now, three persons have tested Covid positive at those testing booths. “However, they are still careless,” he said.
The mayor said the animals were tied up outside of the makeshift structures of the market as well. Hygiene rules were not being followed there.
He issued instructions that the market be run in accordance with hygiene rules.
He said that on-duty magistrates would take action under the law to address the mismanagement at the cattle markets.
Mayor Atiqul Islam said: “This year, 11,000 of our workers will be deployed in cleaning up the city following the slaughtering of the animals.”
