Speakers at a roundtable meeting Wednesday identified fund shortage as the main obstacle that hampers infrastructural development activities in Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) area.
They demanded adequate government allocations for RCC to accelerate the pace of infrastructural developments like construction of roads, culverts, bridges, drainage and sewerage systems and electricity supply lines, especially in the extended rural areas.
Rangpur unit of Sacheton Nagorik Samaj (SNS) organised the daylong round table meeting on ‘Initial Stage of Rangpur City Corporation: Challenges and Way-outs’ at the conference room of the City Bhaban.
City Mayor and valiant freedom fighter Alhaj Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu attended the meeting as the chief guest with Member of SNS Siddikur Rahman in the chair.
Panel Mayors of RCC Abul Kashem and Golam Kabir Kajol, its Chief Executive Officer Ruhul Amin Khan, Members of SNS Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu and Advocate AAM Munir Chowdhury and former Regional Director of Rangpur Betar Kendra Monwara Begum, addressed.
Programme Manager of Transparency International (TIB) for Rangpur Al-Amin Mian, its Deputy Programme Manager (Research & Policy) Mahmud Hassan Talukder and Area manager Dewan Mahfuz-E-Mowla also spoke.
Councilors of RCC, its officials and employees, civil society members, lawyers, journalists, physicians, sociocultural and professional activists, community leaders, teachers, students and elite of the city participated.
Taking part in the discussion, the participants expressed concern over no government allocations under the annual development programme (ADP) for RCC so far when huge allocations are being given to the older city corporations in the country.
They also demanded for formation of Rangpur Development Authority as soon as possible along with adequate government allocations for RCC to accelerate uplift for fulfilling aspiration of the citizens by turning Rangpur into a modern and beautiful city.
