Flood worsens in Sylhet region

The flood situation has deteriorated further in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts and some other parts of Sylhet division as light to moderate rain, thundershower and squally wind are being occurred in the region.
Water level is increasing rapidly in a number of rivers, including Surma, Kushiyara, Dhonu, Jadukata, Rokti and Cholti, and haors due to incessant rainfall and onrush of water from hilly areas.
Some rivers, including Surma and Kushiyara, are now flowing above the danger level in several points.
The water of Surma increased suddenly. The river was flowing 56 centimeters above the danger level at Kanaighat point under Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet. Low-lying areas are coming under water at Kanaighat, Zakiganj, Jaintapur and other upazilas in the district.
Forecasts from Bangladesh and Indian Meteorological Departments suggest that there is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern, north-eastern and south-eastern regions of Bangladesh and adjoining Indian parts in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Surma at Kanaighat and Sylhet and Sunamganj points, Kushiyara at Sherpur-Sylhet, Sarigowain at Saraighat, Old Surma at Derai, Jadukata at Lorergarh, Someswari at Kalmakanda and Sangu at Dohazari points are flowing above their danger levels by 102, 33, 70, 1, 1, 45, 0, 14 and 40 cm respectively.
