Fulbari Day observed at Barisal

‘Fulbari-Dibas’, the day of killing and injuring local people one decade ago, who protested open-pit mining of coal, observed in Barisal with agitation rally and procession on Friday afternoon.
Barisal unit of ‘national committee for preservation of oil-gas-mineral resources, electricity and port’ organised the programmed.
The agitation rally was held in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall presided over by Prof. Biswajit Baroi , convener of the unit.
Among others Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu, district convener of Gano Sanghati Andolon, Principal Mizanur Rahman Selim, secretary district CPB, Sahanti Das of Workers Party, Romela Yasmin, leader of the unit.
After the agitation rally, the participants with a procession going to central Shaheed Minar of the city put their floral tributes in memory of the martyred and injured of the movement demanded fulfilling their dreams.
 On August 26, 2006, Phulbari, a town located in the Dinajpur district, witnessed the killing of five persons at the hands of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) during a massive rally against the controversial open pit coal-digging project supervised by UK-based Asia Energy.
