A man named Ripon Sikder was arrested when he was stealing a wallet from the passengers in the launch bound for Barisal from Dhaka.
Later it is known that he is a fugitive accused in the murder case.
The incident occurred in the launch of MV Parabat-12 on Saturday. After the incident, on allegation of theft, the launch authority recognized him after checking CCTV footages monitors.
Ripon Sikder is the son of one Sobhan Sikder from Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali district. He is also accused in a murder case filed in 2011 at Mirzaganj police station.
According to the launch authorities, the CCTV monitors saw a person grabbing passengers’ bags and taking money. At that time, the launch staff caught him and informed the
Barisal Naval Police. Ripon was arrested by members of the Naval Police after receiving information on Saturday morning. During the arrest, he was along with his wife.
Hasanat Zaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barisal Naval Police, said that a person named Ripon Sikder was brought to the police station in connection with the theft of a wallet in the launch.
On inquiry, I found out that Ripon is an absconding accused in a murder case in Mirzaganj police station of Patuakhali, OC added.
