UNB, Cox’s Bazar :
A fugitive accused in a policeman murder case was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and law enforcers in Maheshkhali upazila on Tuesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rashid, 35, a resident Hoainak village in the upazila. He was the prime accused in the sub-inspector Paresh Karbari killing case.
The SI was killed in a gunfight with criminals at Kalagazipara in Maheskhali on January 18, 2012.
Being tipped off that Rashid was staying at Hoainak Bazar, a team of police conducted a drive there around 7pm.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing police to retaliate that triggered a gun battle.
Rashid was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, said officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station Alamgir Hossain.
Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight, he said, adding that Rashid was accused in 4-5 cases filed against him.
