Staff Reporter :
Fuel prices are likely to be reduced further depending on the price of international market.
Meanwhile, the government has recently reduced the prices of fuel oil by taka five.
Planning Minister MA Mannan said this while speaking at a programme on the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day at the Center for Rehabilitation of Paralyzed (CRP) in Savar on Thursday.
“If the price of oil increases in the world market, we will increase the price and if it decreases, we will reduce it. The difficulty has been caused by the sudden high rise in oil prices, which the government is aware of. The government has already reduced the prices of fuel,” the Planning Minister said.
MA Mannan said that the government has not only reduced the price but said that it will be reduced further.
“We believe that the government will definitely reduce the fuel prices. We, hope there will be no more war or terrible accident in the world market. The world is now in a stable position. So, I hope the situation will be favourable,” he said.
When asked how much the prices of oil can be reduced further, Mannan replied, “I am not the responsible minister in this regard. I have previous experience and the fuel prices will be reduced. But I am in favor of gradual reduction as it is not good to increase or decrease by leaps.”
According to Reuters, oil prices edged higher on Thursday, but remained near eight-month lows, as China’s extension of Covid-19 lockdown measures exacerbated concerns a slowdown in global economic activity would hit fuel demand.
Brent crude futures were up 32 cents, or 0.4 per cent, to $88.32 per barrel at 1220 GMT, after falling to $87.24 earlier, their lowest since January.
