Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said Bangladesh could export world-class products to Sri Lanka at low price if the country signs free trade agreement (FTA).
“Sri Lanka would be benefited if it imports products like RMG, pharmaceuticals, cement, paper from Bangladesh,” he said while addressing the
inaugural session of fifth Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting in
Colombo, said an official release received from Sri Lanka on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Commerce Minister said FTA between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is needed to be signed to boost the bilateral trade.
He said Bangladesh wanted to increase trade with Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen also spoke
on the occasion.
Later, the commerce minister also sat in separate bilateral meetings
with his Sri Lankan counterpart and finance minister Ravi Karunanayke.
Sri Lanka also expressed to ink FTA with Bangladesh.
Now, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have $ 76 million trade, of which
Bangladeshi export volume was $ 30.45 million while import figure was $ 45
million in FY 16.
